“The Madness of Art”: art as a bridge to mental health

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Laura Galo—emotional mentor, creator, and manager of art-based wellness projects—presents in Murcia the second edition of “The Madness of Art,” an initiative that unites art and mental health with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of emotional well-being and creative expression as tools for personal and social transformation.

Promoted by Galo with the support of FUNDAC (Fundación para la Dinamización del Arte y la Cultura Lidó Rico), the project will take place from October 10 to 17 at the Regional Library of Murcia, offering a week of free public activities until capacity is reached.

Throughout the week, visitors can enjoy exhibitions of painting, literature, and music, along with art therapy and conscious flamenco workshops designed to encourage emotional expression, reflection, and social inclusion through art.

The opening ceremony will be held on Monday, October 13, at 5:00 p.m. at the Regional Library of Murcia, with the participation of Laura Galo, creator and organizer of the event; Miriam Pérez Albaladejo, Director General for Persons with Disabilities at the Murcian Institute of Social Action (IMAS); and artist Lidó Rico, who has contributed the image of one of his works to the visual identity of this edition and will take part in the official presentation of the project, where the full program of this second edition will be unveiled.

“The Madness of Art” stems from Galo’s conviction that art can serve as a healing and transformative language, capable of building bridges between emotion, awareness, and creativity. The initiative seeks to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health and promote a more empathetic and understanding perspective toward the emotional suffering that can affect anyone. Through art, it offers a space for encounter in which creation becomes a therapeutic tool, a means of human connection, and a pathway to inclusion and social awareness.

Over the course of the week, there will be participatory activities and dialogues exploring the relationship between art and mental health. Among the highlights, psychiatrists María Herrera and Pedro Rosique will deliver a talk on creativity and therapeutic processes, analyzing how artistic expression can foster emotional understanding and psychological well-being.

With the support of FUNDAC, this second edition consolidates a project that integrates culture, emotional education, and mental health within a shared creative space. The foundation supports the initiative as part of its commitment to art as a vehicle for human development, social inclusion, and emotional well-being, reinforcing its mission to promote cultural projects with a positive social impact.

The event aims to raise awareness about mental health, offer art therapy and self-awareness tools, reduce the stigma associated with psychological suffering, and promote the creation of open and accessible cultural spaces that strengthen the social and emotional community.
